North American team Rallying for Santos WTDU debut
21 December 2018
RALLY Cycling will arrive in Adelaide for the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under with some warm kilometres under their belt and an attacking mindset.
The United States-based team will bring six riders with a mix of UCI-standard experience and a youth to the field in what will be its first race in Australia.
Its fully-stocked North American line-up features four USA riders and two Canadians, led by Sarah Bergen whose 2018 resume included third in the Canadian Road Championship, and first in the points for the 2.2-classified Joe Martin Stage Race in Arkansas.
Krista Doebel-Hickok also brings valuable top-level UCI experience, having previously raced at Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank and Cylance, she will make her first appearance for Rally at the Santos WTDU.
“Our team will be a mixture of youth and experience,” Rally Cycling sports director Zach Bell told tourdownunder.com.au.
“Sara Bergen has multiple appearances at the UCI World Road Championships and high level European UCI races. Krista also has spent several season in the European UCI calendar.
“On the flip side we have younger riders each with a good resume of racing results and proven abilities in North America. We should be well equipped for a variety of scenarios.”
While the team is based in the frosty north of the USA, many of teams riders are preparing in the warmer southern climbs of California and Arizona – conditions much closer to South Australia’s current summer than the winter camps many European teams are currently undertaking.
And with a high-level race with pro UCI teams to benchmark against, Bell is hoping fans by the roadside will see plenty of action from the bright orange Rally Cycling jerseys across the four-day race.
“We are really working on growing the depth in our international calendar and these events give us a chance to get started on the right foot in very competitive fields,” Bell said.
“What we are most looking forward to is high quality racing to start of our 2019 campaign and get us in the right mindset for success through the rest of our calendar.
“We are a team that likes to race and engage in aggressive racing. With a variety of cards to play you can expect to see us active and involved in most key moments through the week.”
The Santos Women’s Tour Down Under runs from 10-13 January 2019 and opens the 11-day festival of cycling that is the Santos Tour Down Under from 10-20 January.
