Explore Stage 3

Soak in the picturesque beaches and rugged coastline from Glenelg to Victor Harbor and explore nature’s playground, the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Reinvigorate the soul with an outdoor escape, with experiences galore for the young and the young-at-heart. Capturing the best of both the countryside and seaside, Santos Tour Down Under Stage 3 brings together fresh produce and boutique, cool-climate wines with coastal surrounds and activities to get you moving.

Food and drinks

Start the day by catching the tram from Adelaide’s city centre to beachside Glenelg. In the upbeat, beachside café culture of Glenelg, there’s an abundance of contemporary cafés around Moseley Square and along the Marina, so good coffee and delicious breakfast is at your fingertips. The Watermark Hotel Coffee Station is a local cyclist favourite with plenty of bike parking and plenty of Grinders coffee to start your day.

Drink in the natural surrounds and menus inspired by local and seasonal produce in the McLaren Vale wine region. Take your pick from more than 70 cellar doors, many paired with in-house restaurants and food to match.

Take a seat at one of the Fleurieu’s craft breweries, try the array of small batch brews that boast a cult following and taste new-age apple and pear ciders. Let the kids explore the surrounds and relax on the verandah, drinking in the eclectic brewers and seaside-meets-country atmosphere.

Things to see and do

Get out of bed extra early and meet the locals for a swim! Glenelg’s Holdfast Shores Marina is the starting point for Temptation Sailing’s incredible dolphin cruises. Offering a bucket-list-worthy experience swimming with dolphins in their natural habitat, you’ll have to book in advance to play with these naturally curious and lively creatures.

Jump in the saddle yourself on a cruisy ride past the vineyards and coastline. The Coast to Vines Rail Trail and the Encounter Bikeway are great for all levels of riders. The Coast to Vines Rail Trail guides you along an old railway line from Marino past McLaren Vale to Willunga. Encounter Bikeway is a mix of on-road biking and shared pathways along a 31 kilometre stretch from Encounter Bay to Goolwa.

The Fleurieu Peninsula is layered with stunning countryside and pristine beaches. For a short snorkel or dive, take in a piece of history with the 125-year-old Star of Greece shipwreck. Under less than four metres of water, you can even take see the wreck at low tide while dining at the Star of Greece Restaurant. With an unassuming frontage this South Australian gem has exceptional seafood, local wine and a cruisy ambience.

Family breakaways

If you choose to stay back in Glenelg after the stage begins, keep the kids entertained at The Beachouse, South Australia’s premier amusement park. Entertainment includes wild waterslides, an indoor playground maze, a mini train, dodgem cars and bumper boats. Catering for babies all the way to teenagers, there is something for everyone. With food and drinks available, you can easily sit back and drink in the vibrant seaside energy.

Both Glenelg and Victor Harbor are perfect seaside towns for kids to explore. The thought of fish and chips, sand castles and ice cream will have the kids wriggling with excitement. After watching the Jersey presentations in Victor Harbor, take the horse-drawn tram across the causeway to Granite Island for a penguin tour at the Granite Island Recreation and Nature Park.

Meet some of Australia’s wildlife at Urimbirra Wildlife Park, only five minutes from Victor Harbor. You can feed kangaroos, visit the birds in the aviary, see lizards, dingoes, crocodiles - there are even opportunities to cuddle koalas and hold snakes!
