Spanish sensations confirmed for Santos Tour Down Under
Spanish brothers Gorka and Jon Izaguirre will combine to tackle the 15th Santos Tour Down Under with cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi in South Australia this month.
Comprising six Spanish riders and French cyclist Juan José Oroz, Euskatel-Euskadi will hit the road to stake its claim on the first UCI WorldTour event of 2013.
Also on the team is MIkel Astarloza, who won the Santos Tour Down Under a decade ago.
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur says the team features several young riders eager to shine alongside more seasoned competitors.
“The younger riders in Euskaltel-Euskadi will be put through their paces but the team also has more experienced team members including 2003 Santos Tour Down Under winner Mikel Astarloza to mentor them through the stages,” Turtur said.
Jon Izaguirre, 23, won his first professional race, the time trial stage of the Vuelta Asturias, in April last year and in the Giro d’Italia launched a solo attack to win the 16th stage.
“Next month’s race features an equal spread of stages to suit sprinters and all-rounders, so Euskaltel-Euskadi’s riders will have the chance to experience all elements of the event.”
The Euskaltel-Euskadi team for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under will be led by Team Manager Alexander Diaz (ESP) and includes riders:
