Mount Barker to kick off second stage
All eyes will be on Mount Barker and Rostrevor today as they host the Hahn Super Dry Stage 2 of the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under.
Yesterday’s successful opening stage attracted an estimated crowd of 106,000 people, with today’s racing set to again attract a large number of fans.
For the first time in race history the peloton will start in the Adelaide Hills hub of Mount Barker before commencing the 116.5km stage through to suburban Adelaide.
The second stage will also see riders tackle the new ŠKODA King of the Mountain climb on Corkscrew Hill.
Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell said the Hahn Super Dry Stage 2 of the Tour would bring thousands of tourists and cycling fans to the Adelaide Hills.
“This stage will give great exposure to many Adelaide Hills towns, with the spotlight on Mount Barker for the first time,” Minister Bignell said.
“There will be plenty of community activities and entertainment along the race route throughout the day, and visitors can also enjoy the Unley Gourmet Gala in the evening which will continue to showcase South Australia’s premium food and wine.
“The final round of the Santos Women’s Cup on King William Road also promises to deliver thrilling action for fans.”
A new initiative, World Detours Down Under, was introduced for the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under and encourages visitors to plan their time around the race.
Detours highlights around Hahn Super Dry Stage 2 include some of South Australia’s premium food and wine experiences such as Shaw & Smith Winery in Balhannah and Beerenberg Farm in Hahndorf, along with the Echunga Golf Club and Morialta Conservation Park at Rostrevor.
