About the Santos Festival of Cycling

Along with the world-class racing, visitors to the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under can enjoy an array of celebrations. These range from a free opening night concert on Saturday 18 January through to the final day of racing on Sunday 26 January. 

With opportunities to glam up and rub shoulders with some of cycling’s best at the Legends’ Night Dinner, put some kilometres into the legs as part of the Bupa Challenge Tour, sample South Australia’s renowned food and wine, attend street parties and get to know the locals at one of the many community activities, there is something for everyone.

Select a day from the drop down list above to see all the action taking place from 18-26 January.  The calendar is continually evolving so be sure to check back regularly.


Saturday 18 January

ADELAIDE CITY COUNCIL TOUR VILLAGE AND BIKE EXPO
Time: 3:00pm – 9:00pm

The Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo will be located in the newly re-developed Victoria Square opposite the Hilton Adelaide. It is a meeting place for cycling fans, an after work hang out, a place to catch up on the day's racing, to see interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph. All official Santos Tour Down Under merchandise can be bought in the Tour Village so you can take home your piece of the action.
The bike expo is an interactive, engaging exhibition with the opportunity to test ride the latest bicycles around the streets of Adelaide, check out the latest cycling gear, get inspired and equip yourself like the pros.

TEAM PRESENTATION AND CONCERT

After checking out all the exhibitors in the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo, head to the main stage and see all the 2014 teams presented to the public for the first time. You’ll also hear from a few of your favourites. 

Following the team presentation, secure your position at the front of stage to kick on at the opening night concert featuring the award winning dance music group The Potbelleez.

Sunday 19 January

ADELAIDE CITY COUNCIL TOUR VILLAGE AND BIKE EXPO

The Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo is the perfect place to savour the atmosphere of the Santos Tour Down Under. This cycling hub boasts all the latest gear, plus stands with great deals on everything from travel to staying safe on the road. Fans can enjoy live action and daily highlights on big screens, with delicious local food and drinks on hand. This is the place to rub shoulders with your favourite cyclists, see interviews and watch team mechanics work their magic.

All official Santos Tour Down Under merchandise can be bought in the Tour Village so you can take home your piece of the action.

NORWOOD CYCLING CLUB ROAD RACE

Norwood Cycling Club will be hosting graded road races (A grade to E grade) around a 5km circuit. The perfect opportunity to watch local riders tough it out on the roads whilst taking in the beautiful surrounds of the Adelaide Hills and all before the big action starts of the Santos Tour Down Under.


SANTOS WOMEN’S CUP

Time: 5.45 – 6.25pm approx.
Location: Victoria Drive, Adelaide
The first stage of the three race series will be a criterium. A fast-paced closed road circuit race held as a preview to the People’s Choice Classic and the Santos Tour Down Under.

A completely new circuit for the curtain raiser in 2014 will see riders race through the heart of Adelaide around a closed-circuit on Victoria Drive.

Come and watch Australia’s top female cyclists do battle on the streets of Adelaide, then followed by a road race around Angaston on Monday 20 January and with the final showdown criterium in Prospect on Tuesday 21 January.

ŠKODA TOUR PARADE ON TRACK

A convoy of over 30 vehicles, the ŠKODA Tour Parade features the Santos Tour Down Under’s official mascot, Oppy the Kangaroo, and the six larger-than-life-sized vehicle-mounted torsos of each of the official Santos Tour Down Under race jerseys. Don’t miss out on this convoy of fanfare, colour and excitement and promotional gifts given away.


PEOPLE'S CHOICE CLASSIC
Time: 7:15pm - 8:15pm approx

A new People’s Choice Classic route will see action start and finish on Victoria Drive. Savour the buzz as top international cyclists hit city streets for the first time in 2014. The People's Choice Classic is a fast paced closed circuit road race, held as a preview to the Santos Tour Down Under. See the winning riders' jersey presentations after the race finish at the Ochre Presentation Podium.

PEOPLE'S CHOICE UNDIES RUN FOR BOWEL CANCER

What’s the most fun you can have in your undies? You might have a few ideas, but we’re pretty confident we’ve found it:

The People’s Choice Undies Run for Bowel Cancer is a unique event that raises funds and awareness about the importance of bowel cancer screening. In its first year, more than 1200 runners stripped down to their undies in front 100,000 spectators before the People’s Choice Classic – raising more than $120,000 for Santos Tour Down Under charity partner Cancer Council SA.

The beautiful vineyards of the Barossa will provide a stunning backdrop for the second stage of the Santos Women’s Cup. Some of Australia’s elite female cyclists will provide some action-packed racing as they ride laps two and three of the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under.

There are sure to be fireworks up Menglers Hill, a 1.25km climb with an average gradient of 8% and some sections at 18%. It will give the hill climbers an opportunity to get revenge on the strong criterium specialists, that’s if they can hold them off into the finish at Angaston!

NURIOOTPA PRE-RACE ENTERTAINMENT

Come along to the Soldiers Memorial Hall in Nuriootpa to make Santos Tour Down Under street decorations and decorate your own bike. Evening entertainment will feature a pre-race party at the Vine Inn.

NORWOOD CYCLING CLUB CRITERIUM

Norwood Cycling Club will be hosting graded criteriums (A grade to E grade) at the Wakefield Rd entrance of Victoria Park.

The racecourse track and spectator stand provides a great viewing point to watch riders as they snake through the smooth corners, repeatedly accelerate hard from corners, attempt rapid and sharp attacks and finishes with an impressive sprint for the line to win.

NURIOOTPA COCKTAIL PARTY

Tuesday 21 January

SAN REMO PASTA STAGE 1 START: NURIOOTPA

A Nuriootpa start was part of the inaugural Santos Tour Down Under in 1999, and locals look forward to welcoming the race back to their town. The beautiful Barossa will provide a stunning backdrop for the riders to sign on from 10am before sending them off at 11am for what will be a testing stage through word-famous vineyards. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the people of the ŠKODA Tour Parade and collect some of their giveaways.

After seeing the riders race through the through the charming streets of Angaston and tackle Menglers Hill, get ready for an action-packed finish as the riders storm home. Don’t forget to sample the delicious produce and wines this region is famous for throughout the day.

The outdoor space in the Tour Village will be the hub of the tour. It is a meeting place for cycling fans, an after work hang out, a place to catch up on the day's racing, to see interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph! Each day there will be an entertainment program showcasing cycling to the fans.

Watch the team mechanics at work as they prepare the bikes for the upcoming stage. Catch the daily race highlights on the big screen and check out the range of sponsor displays. There is ample seating and a vibrant social atmosphere where you can grab a bite to eat or have a drink with your friends.

2014 TOURIFFIC PROSPECT

The Tourrific Prospect street party will be held the evening before the Bike Exchange Stage 2 race start on Prospect Road on 21 January 2014 from 5pm. This hugely popular celebration, attended by over 17000 people in 2013, is an event the whole community can enjoy and will include an expanded Wellness Village and Ochre Markets, four stages of entertainment featuring Lucky Seven, Gemini Downs, and youth bands from Club5082, and plenty of activities for the kids.

CYCLING SA CRITERIUM

Cycling SA will host a variety of entertaining events for all bicycling enthusiasts at the Tourrific Prospect Street Party.

Come down and enjoy the festivities and be entertained by the Little Critters and B grade Women’s criterium support race in the lead up to the final stage of the Santos Women’s Cup.

SANTOS WOMEN’S CUP
Time:  7:00 – 7:45pm approx.
Location: Prospect Rd, Prospect

The third and final stage of the Santos Women’s Cup concludes with another face-paced closed road circuit race, this time in the shape of a hot dog, up and down the main street of Prospect.

This type of race circuit provides the opportunity for riders to race a fast attacking race, as a result of the sharp U-turn corners at each end of the course. This lung sapping, leg burning type of racing will really showcase Australia’s best cyclists as they attempt to ride away for the win and take the prized Santos Women’s Cup home until next year!

Wednesday 22 January

BIKEEXCHANGE.COM.AU STAGE 2 START: PROSPECT
Time: 11:00am
Location: Prospect Road, near Town Hall

Action returns to Touriffic Prospect for the third year running. The suburb is only minutes from the Adelaide CBD, so head to Prospect Road to grab an autograph as riders sign on for the stage from 10am, or visit the ŠKODA Tour Parade and collect some of their giveaways. At 11am, the race to Stirling in the Adelaide Hills will begin! 

BIKEEXCHANGE.COM.AU STAGE 2 FINISH: STIRLING
Time: 2.57pm approx
Location: Mt Barker Road, at oval

Supporters are encouraged to cheer on the riders from the tree-lined streets, as they tackle two laps through Stirling before a frantic push to the finish. In between laps, visit the many cafes and shops in Stirling, before making your way onto the oval for the stage presentations.

With free bike parking settle into a shady picnic spot and enjoy food and drink from one of the local businesses or vendors in the park, free family activities including giant snakes and ladders and connect 4 games will keep the whole family entertained before moving track side to watch the riders pass by. With a chance to win accommodation in the Adelaide Hills the Stirling Green isn’t a place you want to miss.

MT BARKER RD TACKSIDE ACTION
Location: Local businesses along Mt Barker Rd Stirling

Enjoy all the action trackside with street performers including the Santos Super Cycles from 12:30 – 1pm, local food, wine and legendary Adelaide Hills hospitality while you watch the world’s best ride on by.

Thursday 23 January

THOMAS FOODS STAGE 3 START: NORWOOD

Riders and fans will gather in the inner-city suburb of Norwood for another fast paced day of racing. While you are on The Parade, check out some of the latest fashions before the riders begin to sign on at 10am. After seeing the riders off at 11am, grab a bite to eat at one of the many cafes, before following the peloton through towns including Kersbrook, Mount Pleasant and Birdwood.

THOMAS FOODS STAGE 3 FINISH: CAMPBELLTOWN

The outdoor space in the Tour Village will be the hub of the tour. It is a meeting place for cycling fans, an after work hang out, a place to catch up on the day's racing, to see interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph! Each day there will be an entertainment program showcasing cycling to the fans.

On offer will be a free community event based within Anderson Court and the Campbelltown Library car park offering children’s activities, live music, food provided by Flavours of Campbelltown Food Trail businesses, drinks, and casual seating. A circus-based street performance will occur, unique to the event, offering photo opportunities and interaction with the performers, featuring quirky bikes, unicyclists, and jugglers. Also available will be face painting, a jumpy castle, a play gym, a mini race track, a climbing wall, and giant puppets. Children’s entertainers will also be performing.

Watch as thousands of recreational riders take to the Bupa Stage 4 route to feel like a pro rider for a day. Riders can tackle the a full 154.5km course, starting from Unley or take a shorter ride beginning in one of the following locations:

BUPA STAGE 4 START: UNLEY

After seeing off thousands of recreational riders earlier in the day, cosmopolitan Unley gets ready to welcome the professional peloton to the streets. Cyclists will be signing on from 10am, so don’t miss your chance to grab an autograph or photo with your favourite rider. At 11am, riders head for the Adelaide Hills, before making their way towards the Fleurieu Peninsula. 

BUPA STAGE 4 FINISH: VICTOR HARBOR

After travelling though the Adelaide Hills, riders will experience a change of scenery as they enter the Fleurieu Peninsula. Spectacular views and a roaring crowd await the riders, both recreational and professional, as they make their way to the finish on The Esplanade at Victor Harbor.

The spotlight returns to the celebrated vineyards of McLaren Vale for a stage that promises action all the way to the end. With riders signing on at 10am and the ŠKODA Tour Parade handing out giveaways, get in early to secure a place to wave the riders off at 11:10am.

Always a crowd favourite, the hilltop finish on Old Willunga Hill is again set to become the decider in the quest for the Santos Ochre Leader’s Jersey. After fighting for a sprint win at Snapper Point and grabbing fuel in Willunga riders will battle it out in front of thousands of fans up the hill. Up for grabs are not only ŠKODA King of the Mountain points but also the all-important stage win.

The Santos Tour Down Under is much more than a cycling race. One of its best-loved elements is the Legends’ Night Dinner, which honours past and present stars of the sport. Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Andy Schleck, Anna Meares, Mark Cavendish and Philippe Gilbert are among legends recognised in recent years.
 
2014 will honour cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy, who will be joined by Jens Voight and Australia's own Cadel Evans.

Kick off your Australia Day celebrations by watching some Cyclocross racing! Cheer on riders (of all ages) as they race a short lap course featuring trails, grass, trees and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remounting.
 
AUSTRALIA DAY IN HENLEY SQUARE

The City of Charles Sturt will host the first ever satellite Santos Tour Down Under event so settle in from 10.00 to see the swimmers finish in the Nine News Australia Jetty to Jetty Longswim and all the excitement as the presentations and awards take place. Between 12.30 and 2.30pm to watch the final stage of the Santos Tour Down Under live on the big screen. With special guest artists from WOMAdelaide, free entertainment, activities including juggling workshops, face painting and roving entertainers why not make it a full day down at Henley Square.
