About the Santos Festival of Cycling

Along with the world-class racing, visitors to the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under can enjoy an array of celebrations. These range from a free opening night concert on Saturday 17 January through to the final day of racing on Sunday 25 January. 

With opportunities to glam up and rub shoulders with some of cycling’s best at the Legends’ Night Dinner, put some kilometres into the legs as part of the Bupa Challenge Tour, sample South Australia’s renowned food and wine, attend street parties and get to know the locals at one of the many community activities, there is something for everyone.

Details on the Santos Festival of Cycling will be available in the coming weeks and updated regularly so be sure to check back.


Saturday 17 January

Adelaide City Council Tour Village & Bike Expo
Location: Victoria Square, opposite the Santos Tour Down Under host hotel, Hilton Adelaide. 

The Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo can be found in the city's redeveloped Victoria Square. 

In 2015 it will be bigger than ever, so make sure you're there to enjoy the atmosphere and check out the latest cycling gear.

The outdoor space in the Tour Village is the heart of the event. It's a meeting spot for cycling fans, an after work hangout, a place to catch up on the day's racing, watch interviews with cycling stars and maybe even get an autograph! A daily entertainment program will bring music and more cycling to the fans. Watch team mechanics at work as they prepare bikes for the upcoming stage. Catch daily race highlights on the big screen and check out the range of sponsor displays. Pull up a chair and enjoy the vibrant social atmosphere. Stay on for a bite to eat or enjoy a drink with your friends.

The Bike Expo, currently the largest in Australia, is an interactive, engaging exhibition. You'll have the chance to test ride new model bikes around the streets of Adelaide, check out the latest cycling gear, get inspired and equip yourself like the pros.

The inaugural Santos Women’s Tour will see Australia’s top female cyclists battle for victory over four action-packed days from 17 to 20 January. Part of Cycling Australia’s Subaru National Road Series, the event is shaping up to be one of the largest national events of its type.

Take the hassle out of collecting your event accreditation and jersey on the morning of the ride and pick them up before the event.

After checking out all the exhibitors in the Adelaide City Council Tour Village and Bike Expo, head to the main stage and see all the 2015 teams presented to the public for the first time at 6pm. Enjoy the atmosphere and hear form your favourite riders before they hit the road.

ARIA-award winning group Sheppard will kick off the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under. The band is best known for their hits 'Let Me Down Easy' and 'Geronimo', which topped the Australian and international music charts. The free concert will begin from 7.30pm.

 

Sunday 18 January

A convoy of over 30 vehicles, the Subaru Tour Parade features the Santos Tour Down Under’s official mascot, Oppy the Kangaroo, and the six larger-than-life-sized vehicle-mounted torsos of each of the official Santos Tour Down Under race jerseys. Don’t miss out on this convoy of fanfare, colour and excitement and promotional gifts given away.

People’s Choice Undies Run for bowel cancer 
People’s Choice Classic circuit, at the Santos Tour Down Under

This is a unique event to raise funds to beat bowel cancer and reduce the embarrassment associated with it by running in undies en masse in the heart of Adelaide.  

Last year, more than 1,400 runners stripped down to their undies in front 100,000 spectators at the People’s Choice Classic opening race of the Santos Tour Down Under – raising more than $150,000 for Cancer Council SA.

Registration for the event is $30 which includes your branded undies, top and $5 delivery

Location: Adelaide East End 

The world’s best cyclists are back in town and ready to race. Head to the heart of Adelaide to atch the peloton in action and get set for a blistering sprint finish.

Monday 19 January

Tourrific Prospect

Location: Prospect Road – Village Heart: between Staples Court and Rose Street Prospect.

Tourrific Prospect Street Party will be held on the evening of the official Santos Tour Down Under rest day, so there is no need for you, to be left looking for something to do as City of Prospect once again presents this hugely popular event now in its fourth year.

Tourrific Prospect will display Prospect’s own unique sense of community celebration; as local residents and traders alike become your hosts for an evening of great hospitality, music, dancing in the streets and art and cycling demonstrations for all ages - showcasing the creativity Prospect is known for.

Tourrific Prospect is an event the whole cycling and non-cycling community can enjoy together so why have a ‘rest day’ when you can have a Tourrific evening in Prospect.

Tuesday 20 January

Barossa Tweed Ride 
Nuriootpa to Tanunda

A by-gone era dress up ride from Nuriootpa to Tanunda prior to the official Santos Tour Down Under stage start with participants wearing outfits from the period of their bike, pre 1980. Bikes will also be on display near the Cycle Hub.

Barossa Cycle Hub Official Opening 
Murray Street, Tanunda (town centre precinct near the race start)

The official opening of the Barossa Cycle Hub – the first dedicated cycle tourism facility in regional SA. The facility is located in the heart of the Tanunda main street, adjacent to the award winning Barossa Visitor Centre. The Cycle Hub features complementary cycle services including shower, public toilets, bike hire, cycle storage and lockers, regional cycle and tourism information and a bike maintenance area.

Tanunda Street Festival

Tanunda Main Street will be closed off to the public and offers a fun –filled carnival like atmosphere with children’s activities, face painting, kids bike decoration competition and the beginning of the Santos Tour Down Under stage start. 


Hostworks Stage 1 viewing points
Bethany & Williamstown
11.30 – 1.20pm

The historic township of Bethany will make for a great viewing platform for the first and second sprint stages of Hostworks Stage 1 of the tour. While Williamstown is a perfect location to view Hostworks Stage 1 of the race and enjoy the local hospitality in one of the many boutique winery cellar door outlets. 

Gear up @ Campbelltown
Fox Field Oval, Athelstone
11.00am – 2.30pm

Campbelltown Council is offering the free community event Gear Up @ Campbelltown. There will be Flavours of Campbelltown Food Trail vendors offering a great selection of food and drinks, plus water-based fun including a huge slip ‘n slide, water guzzlers and children’s water activities. There’s also a Whim(cycle) Garden providing picnic spots, hidden garden delights and a fully knitted caravan! A kids’ cycle track and cycle smoothies will ensure there are lots of things for children to do. For the adults there will be live on-stage entertainment, tables, chairs and umbrellas for comfort.

Santos Tour Down Under returns to Stirling in 2015 with another epic stage finish set to bring all the excitement, buzz and crowds to the Hills that Stirling finishes are renowned for. Stirling will be transformed into a Village Festival, with the famous Stirling Market along with live music, street performers and stacks more, providing the perfect day out to experience all that Stirling has to offer.

Paracombe Picnic Day
Paracombe Oval

Paracombe, tucked amid Adelaide Hills orchards and vineyards will host its first Santos Tour Down Under Stage Finish in 2015. Famous for its pears, the Picnic Day will feature the best food and wine that Paracombe has to offer. Bring a picnic blanket and settle in with family and friends as we get set to watch an exhilarating stage finish in the Hills. Arrive early to watch the race on the big screen as it makes it way up the Hills. The kids will also enjoy the jumping castle and face painting!

Return of the Tour: Street Party

The Santos Tour Down Under returns to the Bay for the first time since 2008. Join us for a free street party from 5.00pm – 9.30pm along Jetty Road Glenelg. Leave the car at home and catch the tram with the family to enjoy free family fun, live music, fashion and outdoor dining and wine bar.

The Park Party - Breakaway in the City of Onkaparinga

Soak up all the excitement and anticipation of the race start in McLaren Vale at The Park Party. There will be something for everyone with market stalls and free children's activities, games and entertainment.


The Beach Party - Breakaway in the City of Onkaparinga 
Esplanade Snapper Point, Aldinga Beach

Pack your hat and sunscreen and join The Beach Party trackside at Aldinga Beach. There will be so much to see and do with a special edition of the Aldinga Markets, free children's activities and entertainment, live music and licenced area


The Peloton Picnic - Breakaway in the City of Onkaparinga 
Old Court House, Willunga

Bring a picnic rug and claim your spot under the shade of a gum tree, trackside at The Peloton Picnic in Willunga. You won't miss a minute of the action with live race coverage on a giant TV screen. Enjoy the free family focussed event with children's activities, live music, market stalls and licensed area.

You’ve watched them race and marveled at their speed, strength and spirit. Now it’s time to hear the stories behind their success. The Santos Tour Down Under’s Legends’ Night Dinner celebrates the biggest names in world cycling, with riders interviewed on stage by renowned commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen. Sir Chris Hoy, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Anna Meares, Cadel Evans and Mark Cavendish are among legends honoured in recent years. Dress to impress, raise your glass and enjoy!

Sunday 25 January

Location: King William Road, Adelaide 

Location: Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6 circuit 

Young riders take centre stage for the Bupa mini tour for kids, which is open to children aged between six and 12. These cycling stars of tomorrow ride laps of the Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6 start/finish straight hours before the world’s best take to the road. A special t-shirt and gift bag go home with every participant.
