Route Information

Cyclists take part in the 2011 Mutual Community Challenge Tour

The 2012 Bupa Challenge Tour has four start locations. These are Norwood, Gumeracha, Mt Pleasant and Tanunda. Read more about start times and download maps below.

Escape route
There is one escape route offered along the Bupa Stage 4 route. This will take 19km off the course and avoid the ŠKODA King of the Mountain climb at Menglers Hill. This escape route is available to all riders from all start locations. The individual point to point documents will contain further information about this option.

AvantiPlus Mechanical Support

AvantiPlus will again be providing mechanical support during the Bupa Challenge Tour. Support vehicles will be at each start location out on course and situated at the Mt Pleasant refreshment point offering assistance in case of a mechanical breakdown.  

The mechanics will have parts available to purchase including:

Tube replacement - $15
Tyre replacement - from $25
Cable replacement/ gear or brake adjustment - $20 

Prices for other repairs available from the mechanic. In the event of broken spokes/axles etc a  limited number of wheels will be available for loan. Cash or credit cards accepted.

AvantiPlus stores in South Australia are also offering participants the opportunity to bring your bike in for a free pre-event safety check.  The experienced staff at your local AvantiPlus store will ensure that your bike is up for the challenge and if it’s not, they’ll provide you with a (hopefully short!) list of suggested repairs to have carried out.  Visit www.avantiplus.com.au to locate your closest store or call 1300 4 AVANTIPLUS and enter your post code when prompted to connect with your local store.

Start locations

Norwood

Official rider briefing: 6:15
Start time: 6:30am

Getting to Norwood

Norwood is a 10-minute drive east of the Adelaide CBD. From the CBD head east on Wakefield Rd to the Britannia Roundabout, turn left onto Fullarton Rd, then turn right onto The Parade.

Norwood car parking and drop off

There is no designated car parking at Norwood, but there is ample parking in the surrounding streets. If being dropped off, the drop off point will be The Parade, between Sydenham Road and Fullarton Road. Please note, The Parade will be closed to traffic from Portrush Road through to Sydenham Road.

Coach Transfers
There are no coach transfers available to the Norwood start.

Gumeracha
Official rider briefing: 6:45am
Start time: 7:00am

Getting to Gumeracha
Gumeracha is approximately 40km north east of the Adelaide CBD.
Travel via the Freeway (approx 59km): Head eastwards along the South Eastern Freeway, take the Hahndorf exit then proceed through Verdun, Balhannah, Oakbank, Woodside and Lobethal to Gumeracha.
The oval is located on Albert Street, the main road of Gumeracha. Allow at least one hour to drive to Gumeracha from Adelaide.

Gumeracha car parking and drop off
Car parking will be allowed at the Gumeracha Oval as directed by officials. It is however, unsecured and parking is at your own risk. Family and friends who come to the start of the event can park at the oval but are also encouraged to find a park in the surrounding streets.

Coach Transfers
Buses to Gumeracha will begin loading at 5am at the Torrens Parade Ground which is located on the corner of Victoria Drive and King William Rd, Adelaide. Buses will depart at 5.30am. Coach transfers need to be pre booked.

Mt Pleasant
Official rider briefing: 7:15am
Start time: 7:30am

Getting to Mt Pleasant
From Adelaide, Mt Pleasant is approximately 55 km, and is located to the north east of the Adelaide CBD. Drive via the South Eastern Freeway, take the Hahndorf exit then drive through Verdun, Balhannah, Oakbank, Woodside, Mt Torrens, Birdwood through to Mt Pleasant.
The oval is located on the main road of Mt Pleasant. Allow at least 65 minutes to drive to Mt Pleasant from Adelaide.

Car parking will be allowed at the Mt Pleasant Oval as directed by officials. It is however, unsecured and parking is at your own risk. Family and friends who come to the start of the event can park at the oval, but are also encouraged to find a park in the surrounding streets.

Tanunda
Official rider briefing: 8:45am
Start time: 9:00am

Getting to Tanunda
From Adelaide, Tanunda is approximately 75 km. From Adelaide take Main North Road (A20) to Gepps Cross, then take the Port Wakefield Road (A1). Follow this to the Northern Expressway. Take the left exit at the signs to the Barossa Valley. Continue until you see the exit sign to Tanunda.
The oval is located on Elizabeth Street. Allow at least 75 minutes to drive to Tanunda from Adelaide.

Tanunda car parking and drop off
Please note, there is no car parking at the Tanunda Oval, but there is ample parking in the surrounding streets. The Barossa Council will also provide some temporary car parks that will be signposted.

Coach Transfer
Buses to Tanunda will begin loading at 6.30am at the Torrens Parade Ground which is located on the corner of Victoria Drive and King William Rd, Adelaide. Buses will depart at 7.15am. Coach transfers need to be pre booked
