Registrations open for 2013 Bupa Challenge Tour
Cycling enthusiasts from around Australia and the world can now register to ride the same route as world-class cyclists in the Bupa Challenge Tour presented by The Advertiser as part of the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under.
Launched today, the route from Modbury, just north of Adelaide, to Tanunda in the beautiful Barossa will give cyclists the opportunity to challenge themselves just hours before the professionals take to the same route.
The Bupa Challenge Tour, part of the ŠKODA Breakaway Series, will be held on Friday 25 January 2013. For the first time riders have the opportunity to gain free entry in the ride if they raise $1,000 or more as part of the
Cancer Council’s Ride for a reason fundraising campaign.
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur said next year’s Bupa Challenge Tour would provide riders with three different starts and ride distances.
“The full route from Modbury to Tanunda is 127 kilometres, while the second start from Kersbrook is a 92 kilometre ride. The third start from Mt Pleasant is 46.5 kilometres from the finish line at Tanunda,” Mike Turtur said.
“Cyclists riding the full route from Modbury will also get the chance to conquer the ŠKODA King of the Mountain climb in Humbug Scrub.”
“Last year, more than 7,000 people participated in the Bupa Challenge Tour including more than 2,200 riders who travelled from interstate and overseas to take part.
“Now is the time to register, set some goals and start training for next year’s event.”
Early bird registrations are open from today until Thursday 12 July, while regular registrations will open from 13 July 2012 to 11 January 2013.
Bupa’s General Manager for South Australia, Daniel Gallagher, said Bupa was looking forward to its involvement in 2013 as part of a long-standing commitment to the event.
“We’re tremendously excited to sponsor the Bupa Challenge Tour for the seventh consecutive year,” Daniel Gallagher said.
“It’s an iconic cycling event which truly resonates with Australia’s cycling public and reiterates our goal of helping people lead longer, healthier, happier lives by encouraging them to make positive lifestyle choices”.
Teams of five riders or more can register up until Monday 22 October 2012 and have their team name printed on their jersey as well as go into the draw VIP hospitality tickets to Stage 6 of the Santos Tour Down Under.
Once again the Santos Tour Down Under is teaming up with Cancer Council SA, the official charity partner of the event.
“Ride for a reason is your way to join the Santos Tour Down Under’s Bupa Challenge Tour and make a difference, by raising funds for critical cancer research,” says Troy Flower, General Manager Business Development, Cancer Council SA.
“Professional, amateur or first-time cyclists can join in the Santos Tour Down Under action while also making a difference for people with cancer. Ride for a reason and ride to beat cancer in the 2013 Bupa Challenge Tour.”
