‘Pink’ Penwortham Awarded Santos Best Dressed Town

Riders in today's Santos Tour Down Under Stage One were greeted by a sea of pink in Penwortham, the winning town for the first day of the Santos Best Dressed Town competition.

Stage one from Prospect to Clare saw the small town of Penwortham just south of Clare come together to put on a formidable show. On display was a children’s bike competition, ladies on pink stationary bikes, pink flags throughout the town, a truck with ‘Tour de Clare’ signage and a rider peddling a stationary bike on top of one of the town’s statues. The town also named themselves ‘Pink Penwortham’ for the day.

The Santos Judging Panel said they were impressed by Penwortham’s sense of community.

“Penwortham won due to their community spirit and community pride,” the Santos Judging Panel said.

“They are a very small community and you could see that they love where they live and what they did to contribute to the event.

“They came together all in pink to support Pink Penwortham”.

The Santos Best Dressed Town Competition has been a part of the Santos Tour Down Under since the inaugural race in 1999 and is a great way for South Australian businesses and households to be a part of the excitement during the Santos Festival of Cycling.

The winner of the Santos Best Dressed Commercial Property for Stage One went to A Classic Image Hair and Beauty Salon in Prospect. The salon displayed an old bike decorated with different hair products including dolls’ hair and hair spray.

“A Classic Image Hair and Beauty Salon won because of their passion and their mannequin, Vanessa, who was part of the display,” the Santos Judging Panel said. “They had also incorporated all products that are available through their business.”

Tarlee, south of Riverton, won the Innovation Award for its use of recycled materials in its decoration.

‘Pink Penwortham’ will go into the running to become the Santos Tour Down Under’s overall best dressed town – a title that celebrates the individuals and communities that participate each year. The overall category winner will be announced at the end of the Santos Tour Down Under.

Stage winners of the Best Dressed Town competition will win prizes including framed and signed race jerseys, gift packs and garden products from Peats Soil and Garden Supplies.

Tomorrow’s race will see Colemans Group Stage Two of the Santos Tour Down Under go from Lobethal to Stirling in the Adelaide Hills.
