Tour Village

Talk tactics and steal an autograph form the best cyclists in the world. Grab an espresso and chill out before a night of partying in downtown Adelaide. Deck yourself out in the event colour - orange - or official 2007 Tour Down Under merchandise.

The Adelaide City Council Tour Village is the engine room of the event – riders and teams take off from here each morning and return each afternoon. But unlike most European events, centre stage for the Tour Down Under is designed as much for the fans as the competing teams.

So make the Adelaide City Council Tour Village your home base too. Open 4pm to 7pm from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 January. Entry is free.

Oppy

Making his second appearance in the Tour Down Under since returning from the Tour de France in July 2005, Oppy the Kangaroo will be part of this year’s Tour Parade. Oppy – named after internationally acclaimed Australian cyclist and politician Sir Hubert ‘Oppy’ Opperman – is wearing the Tour Down Under Ochre Leader’s Jersey. He is perched on top of a vehicle as he was in the Tour de France ‘publicity caravan’, a parade of promotional vehicles and characters that leads the race.

Safety

Cycling can be a dangerous sport for both competitors and spectators. To keep out of harm’s way, please remember that riders and support vehicles use both sides of the road. Listen for advance warnings from the South Australia Police, ensure that children are well back from the side of the road at all times and pets remain on a leash.

Road Closures

As in previous years, the event operates ‘rolling road closures’ along Stages 1-4. Once the Tour Parade vehicles pass by, you know the race will follow in approximately 20 minutes. Riders usually take between 5-10 minutes to pass by, so cheer them on. Once the Green Light vehicle and the police escort have passed, the road is open again. www.cyclingnews.com
